  14.  LOGIC BOMBER GETS OFF

  17. A  disgruntled programmer escaped a prison  sentence  recently,  despite 
  18. causing  over £30,000 worth of damage to his former employer's  computer 
  19. system.  Gareth  Hardy planted a logic bomb in the system  at  Chilworth 
  20. Communications, a direct mail company, after a series of arguments  with 
  21. the  MD.  The logic bomb was activated after he left in September  1990, 
  22. and scrambled all their files.

  24. At the Old Bailey,  Hardy  admitted to making unauthorised modifications 
  25. to computer material with intent to pervert or inhibit access,  contrary 
  26. to section 3 of the Computer Misuse act 1990,  although he claimed  that 
  27. the did not mean it to go off.

  29. Hardy  was  sentenced to 140 hours of community service and  ordered  to 
  30. play £3,000 compensation.  His new employers were unaware of the charges 
  31. against him until his court appearance and he now faced being demoted.

  34.  MONSTERS IN LONDON, GAMEMASTERS IN BRUM

  37. Bruce Everiss, proprietor of the All Formats Fair, was recently reported 
  38. as saying that the fairs  " are going 'monster' on us ". This wasn't the 
  39. impression I got at the Nov 14th show in London.  If anything the number 
  40. of  stands has fallen since it moved from the scruffy  but  characterful 
  41. Old Horticultural halls to the relatively plush and anonymous Novotel.
  42.  
  43. Still,  the  organisers  cunningly timed their Birmingham  show  at  the 
  44. Motorcycle  museum to co-incide with the much hyped Gamesmaster Live  at 
  45. the nearby NEC.

  51. Further to my comments on TV computer shows, it seems that Bad Influence 
  52. at least  may support the ST.  A viewer wrote in to complain that all TV 
  53. computer  shows  ignore the ST.  Andy Crane promised  that  ST  software 
  54. reviews  will be included in future shows.

  57.  A CAUTIONARY TALE

  60. This  letter recently appeared in my local paper,  and  I  think,  while 
  61. being  quite sad,  serves as a warning to never trust the sale  of  your 
  62. computer  equipment (though heaven forbid,  not your ST) to  a  computer 
  63. illiterate!

  66.  ' I  am appealing  to the couple who came and  bought  my  young  son's 
  67. Nintendo entertainment system & games from our house.  I was out at  the 
  68. time and my husband saw them about buying all the games for £40.  My son 
  69. was selling the games seperately, but my husband gave them everything in 
  70. two bags.

  72. With the sale of the items seperately and saving up his pocket money for 
  73. some considerable time,  he would have had enough to buy the Super  NES. 
  74. The  tears and look of disbelief on his face when I told him  about  the 
  75. mix-up  would I hope touch the heart of this couple.  So please  get  in 
  76. touch as my son is £50 out of pocket and his dad's in the dog house. '

  79. reading how much they've got for nothing! That's life I s'pose.

  82.  GULF WAR STARTS AGAIN AND AGAIN AND ...

  85. COMPUTING  magazine  reports  that Stormin' Norman  Schwarzkof  and  his 
  86. Pentagon pals  are  the latest recruits to the  video  games  craze.  US 
  87. millitary  top  brass videotaped the entire Gulf War  using  cameras  in 
  88. planes and tanks etc and thousands of hours of it was digitized and  fed 
  89. into  Concurrent  simulators.  These are just posh  versions  of  arcade 
  90. virtual  reality  games.  The  result is the world's  biggest  and  most 
  91. violent video game which Pentagon officials can  replay their  favourite 
  92. moments of the war.

  98. * The Falcon's super internal 2.5 inch IDE hard disk is already old hat. 
  99. Hewlett  Packard  have  come up with a 1.3 inch  drive,  albeit  with  a 
  100. storage capacity of only 21 megabytes.  A number of other  manufacturers 
  101. have developed 1.8inch drives,  and IBM are shipping some of their  PS/2 
  102. models with 2.88mb 3.5inch floppy drives - double the Falcon's capacity.

  104. * CORRECTION  - last  time I told you of a daily computer  section  that 
  105. could be found on ORACLE, the ITV teletext service. Unfortunately by the 
  106. time you got to read it,  ORACLE had, like some ITV companies lost their 
  107. franchise and a new service taken over.  Luckily TELETEXT on 3 (the  new 
  108. incumbent) had the foresight to include 5 pages of daily  computer/video 
  109. games news and reviews,  starting on Page 370.
